Some cases on Theator display a Case Complexity grade — a five-level rating that reflects how demanding the procedure was. When a grade is available, you'll see it on the case page alongside the other case details, shown as a label with a small gauge. This article explains what the grades mean, how they are determined, and where to find them.
What the Complexity Grade Means
The complexity grade is a five-level scale. Each level fills the gauge a little further, so a higher grade means a more complex case.

A Low grade indicates a straightforward case, while an Extreme grade indicates a case with the highest level of complexity.
Where to Find It
To see the complexity grade for a case:
- Open the case page.
- Look in the case-information panel with the rest of the case details (such as Case ID, Procedure type, and Duration).
- Find the entry labeled Complexity:. The grade appears next to a gauge that fills according to the level.
The grade is displayed only when it is available for that case.
How the Grade Is Determined
The complexity grade is derived from procedure-specific clinical factors identified during Theator's analysis of the case. Rather than a single generic score, the grade reflects the factors that make a given type of procedure more or less demanding, so the same grade carries a consistent meaning across cases of the same procedure type.
The grade is currently available for a subset of procedure types. As coverage expands, the grade will appear on more cases.
Why a Case May Not Show a Complexity Grade
Not every case displays a complexity grade. The Complexity: entry appears only when a grade has been computed for that case's procedure type. If you don't see it on a case, a complexity grade is not yet available for that procedure — this does not indicate a problem with the case or its analysis.
Asking the AI Assistant About Complexity
You don't have to open each case to review complexity — you can ask the AI Assistant to surface it across your case library in plain language. Open the AI Assistant from the left sidebar and try:
- "Show me the complexity of all my operations, grouped by procedure type."
- "What's the typical complexity grade for my appendectomies?"
- "Rank my cholecystectomy cases from most to least complex."
- "What is the complexity grade for case [Case ID]?"
The assistant reports the grade only for cases where one is available (see Why a Case May Not Show a Complexity Grade above), and every answer is scoped to the cases you are permitted to view.
