Yes — Theator tracks work Relative Value Units (wRVUs) and shows them in your analytics. You will find RVU data in Department Analytics and in custom KPI dashboards. This article explains what a wRVU is, how Theator calculates it, and exactly where to look.
What is a wRVU?
A work Relative Value Unit (wRVU) is a standardized measure of the physician work involved in a procedure — the time, technical skill, effort, and clinical judgment it requires. Because wRVUs are tied to a procedure's billing (CPT) code, they give departments a consistent way to compare workload and productivity across surgeons and procedure types, regardless of how long or complex an individual case was.
"RVU" and "wRVU" are often used interchangeably. In Theator, the value shown is the work component (wRVU).
Does Theator track RVUs?
Yes. Theator calculates a wRVU for each case that has associated procedure (CPT) codes which map to published RVU values. Cases without mapped codes — for example, those missing billing data — will not contribute a wRVU value. Theator aggregates those values across your eligible cases, letting you see total and average wRVUs by surgeon, procedure type, and department over the date range you select in Department Analytics.
Where to find wRVU data
Department Analytics — Activity tab
- In the sidebar, open Surgical Excellence and select Department Analytics.
- Open the Activity tab (this is the default tab).
At the top of the tab you will see summary metrics for the selected time period, including:
- Total Cases
- Total wRVU
- Avg wRVU/Case
- Active Surgeons
Below the summary, the Cases by surgeon and procedure type table breaks wRVU data down further. Each row shows a surgeon's (or department's) Total Cases and Total wRVU, alongside case counts per procedure type. Use the By Surgeon and By Department toggle to switch between individual and department-level views.
Depending on your institution's configuration, surgeon names may appear anonymized.
Organization KPI dashboards
Theator also surfaces wRVU in the Organization KPIs dashboard, available to users with an admin or venue admin role when the KPIs feature is enabled for your venue. The dashboard can include tiles for:
- Total wRVU — the summed wRVUs for your cases.
- Average wRVU per case — the mean wRVU per case.
The contents of the KPI dashboard are configured by your Theator representative. If you would like to add or adjust wRVU tiles on your dashboard, contact your Theator account team.
Why don't I see wRVU data?
There are two common reasons:
- Feature access — wRVU data appears inside Department Analytics, which must be enabled for your venue. If you do not see Department Analytics under Surgical Excellence in the sidebar, the feature is not turned on for your account or your role does not have access. Contact your Account Admin to check whether it can be enabled for you.
- Missing billing or procedure codes — Theator calculates wRVUs from CPT codes linked to each case. If a case does not have associated billing codes, or those codes do not map to RVU values, it will not contribute to your wRVU totals. Your Account Admin or Theator representative can help confirm whether billing data integration is configured for your institution.
