Uploading Files to the AI Assistant

You can attach a file to the AI Assistant and ask questions about it. Upload a PDF, Word document, spreadsheet, text file, or image, and the assistant reads the file and answers based on its contents — useful for working through a scoring rubric, a checklist, or a reference document you already have. This article explains how to attach a file, which file types are supported, and the size limits to keep in mind.

How to Attach a File

You attach files right from the message box, in either of two ways:

  1. Click the Attach file button in the message box and choose a file from your device.
  2. Or drag a file from your computer and drop it onto the message box.

The file uploads and appears as a chip in the message box. Wait for the upload to finish, type your question, and send. You can send a file on its own, without typing a question, once the upload completes. To remove a file before sending, click the remove control on its chip.

Supported File Types

The assistant handles two groups of files.

Documents it reads as text:

  • PDF (.pdf)
  • Word (.docx)
  • Excel (.xlsx)
  • CSV (.csv)
  • Plain text (.txt)
  • Markdown (.md)

Images it can look at directly:

  • PNG (.png)
  • JPG / JPEG (.jpg, .jpeg)
  • WEBP (.webp)
  • GIF (.gif)

Other file types are not supported. The file picker only shows the listed formats, and dragging an unsupported file onto the message box shows a notice explaining which formats are accepted — the file is not uploaded.

Size and Length Limits

  • Images must be 5 MB or smaller. If an image is larger, the message box will not accept it and asks you to use a smaller file.
  • Very long documents are read up to a limit. The assistant reads roughly the first 50,000 characters of a document's text. If a file is longer than that, the assistant works from a truncated version — split a very large document into smaller files if you need all of it covered.
  • Spreadsheets and CSVs are sampled first. By default the assistant reads the first few rows to understand the columns. You can ask it to read more rows, but very large or wide files are still subject to the overall character limit — if you need every row, consider splitting the file into smaller pieces first.

What Happens to My File

Your upload goes to your account's private storage. The assistant reads the file to answer your question in that conversation. Attaching a file does not change your surgical data in Theator, and it does not publish the file anywhere.
